皆様、特に比較的年輩の方々は、この題名の歌、流れているメロディをよくご存知だと思います。 あるいは、詳しくはご存じではなくても、どこかで耳にした、あるいは目にした、旋律であり、詩であることでしょう。元は、ペインの詩にビショップが作曲した歌とのことですが、日本では里見 義による（訳）詩がよく知られています。
以下に示すのがその元の詩と里見訳の詩です。
